Snapchat memories won’t load and you are not sure why? You are trying to load saved memories but except for the first few, all of them appear blank of greyed out. Preview pictures will still be available, but not a single older memory will load when you tap on it.
Many users have been complaining about Snapchat memories not working for quite some time. In fact, there are such complaints in forums from over 3 years ago. However, this doesn’t imply that the problem cannot be fixed. In this guide, you will learn the reason behind your Snapchat memories missing and how you can fix the problem for good.
Why Snapchat memories feature isn’t working
Snapchat memories typically stop working due to any of the following reasons:
- Snapchat is trying to access your memories from its cache files

- Snapchat servers may be down
- Failure to back up your memories

Solution#1: Restart your phone
If one of your Snapchat memories has disappeared, a simple restart can fix the problem. A restart works best for minor issues including failure of the application to load properly. When restarting your phone, make sure to turn it off completely and give it a minute or two before you switch it on.
To restart your iPhone:
- Press and hold either the volume up or volume down button and the side button simultaneously until an Apple logo appears.
- Drag the slider and wait for about 30 seconds for your device to turn off
- To turn your device on, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo
To restart your Android device:
- Hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously
- Select Restart on the menu that appears
- Wait for the device to restart
In some Android devices, you will have to press the Power and Volume Up or Volume Down button in order to restart the device.
Solution#2: Clear Snapchat cache
Snapchat stores your memories on its server to save space on your device. What is left on your device are cache files that bear a reference to the Snapchat memories. If memories appear grey or empty, Snapchat could be displaying what is in its cache files rather than the memory itself.
To clear Snapchat memories cache:
- Open Snapchat
- Go to Settings (usually represented by a Gear icon under ‘My Profile’)
- Scroll down to Cache
- Tap Clear All (If you are on Android, tap Continue)
- Switch off your device for a minute then switch it back on
Note that this process won’t result in any data loss. Your Snapchat Memories, Chats and Snaps will still be accessible on your account.
Solution#3: Check Snapchat server status
Being a web app, Snapchat runs online and is hosted on a server. Sometimes technical issues can result in the server being down. As a result, Snapchat won’t work.
In most cases, this is usually a regional issue as apps with a large user base usually have different servers located in different places around the world.
One way to know if this is a server problem is to ask your friends whether they are able to log into Snapchat and view their memories. If all of them cannot, then there is nothing you can do about it other than wait for the technical team at Snapchat or the responsible company to fix this problem.
Another way to know if Snapchat servers are down is to use downdetector.com. Visit the Snapchat status page to know if there are any problems with the app.
On the other hand, if your friends are able to use the app without any issues, then proceed to the next solution on this list.
Solution#4: Delete and reinstall Snapchat
A bug or glitch might be responsible for Snapchat flashback not working. If this is an individual case that is affecting your device only, you need to delete Snapchat. Ensure that you have deleted it completely, restart your phone and then reinstall a fresh copy of Snapchat from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store if you are using an Android device.
Conclusion
Your Snapchat account should be working again and you should be able to see all your memories. If they are neither loading nor showing, you need to contact the Snapchat customer support. Otherwise, let us know which step fixed your Snapchat memories not working issue in the comments below.
